This course focuses on developing the skills needed for understanding academic texts and for writing academic English, to approximately CEFR mid-B2 level.
Course Content
- Academic Vocabulary - Test 1 and Test 2: 40 points
- Academic Reading - Quiz 1 and Quiz 2: 40 points
- Extensive Reading: 60 points (60 pages or 30,000 words (1 page=500 words)
- Paraphrasing Skills: 30 points (10 pages or about 5000 words)
- Reflective Writing: 30 points (10 pages or about 5000 words)
- Writing a Research Paper: 100 points
- Final Written Exam: 100 points
Course Objectives
- Produce independent readers who value reading as a life-long pursuit
- Develop the culture of reading and critical thinking skills
- Improve writing which involves not only the accurate use of language but also the effective selection and organization of information
- Learn how to select relevant data to support an argument and solve a specific problem
- Develop extensive reading and proofreading skills and become critical readers by selecting reliable information
- Write a mini-research paper using appropriate reference materials
Course Outcomes
- Write well-structured, logical academic essays using the words from Academic Word List
- Find reliable information in the internet; collect and organize data related to a given topic
- Select relevant data to support an argument; arrange ideas in a logical order;
- Use material from relevant reliable sources to develop clear and detailed text, write a mini-research paper acknowledging materials used by citing sources in APA format and using direct quotations correctly so that detailed information is communicated reliably and with appropriate acknowledgement
- Draft, revise, edit and proofread written work using appropriate reference materials such as dictionaries and encyclopedias
- Paraphrase texts using correct grammar, syntax, full sentences and complete paragraphs; use transitions and other cohesive devices to link ideas effectively within and between paragraphs.
